My take.
They don't want to be car companies. They want to be finnance companies. The cars are a loss leader for the finnancing business.
Good point.... I laughed last night seeing a GMAC ad. "Put your money in a GMAC CD"... "It's safe".
Uh-huh.
Over the summer I went to a car show with my 70-something aunt and 80-something uncle and I asked them, "did all the cars on the road look like this?"
"Yes."
"All these cool designs and colors?"
"Yes."
Then we got into a bright green Honda Element and drove home.
